WHO IS KASANE TETO?

Kasane Teto is a vocal synth character with voicebanks available for the softwares UTAU, TALQu, Synthesizer V Studio, and VOICEPEAK. She orignated as a hoax created by users of 2chan (Japan's equivalent to 4chan), also called VIP@2ch, in which they would create a line of characters for the purpose of tricking people into thinking they were the next voicebanks to be released by Crypton Future Media for the VOCALOID software. This group of characters are referred to as VIPPERLoids. Teto herself was the very first VIPPERloid, and a fake demo video of her was released on NicoNicoDouga on April 1st, 2008, which was just a pitched up recording of her voice provider Oyamano Mayo singing "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru". Teto's first actual voicebank was released April 13th, 2008, for the UTAU software, and was of course voiced by the same person who sung her original demo.

She's regarded as one of the primary reasons the UTAU software became popular due to her infamy as a fake, as well as her general fame as a character. Her popularity ultimately lead to the creation of other VIPPERloids, the most popular aside from Teto being Yokune Ruko, Namine Ritsu, and Sukone Tei. She was also the first UTAU created with samples of a real human's voice, since Uta Utane (also known as Defoko), the very first UTAU voicebank as well as the voicebank that comes preinstalled with the software, had her voice sampled from the machine-synthesized text-to-speech software "AquesTalk".

She went relatively unnoticed by the majority of vocal synth producers for a while until near the end of 2008, when several producers began composing songs for her, officially cementing her place in the hearts of many vocal synth fans. The doujin circle "TWINDRILL" was founded in 2009 for the purpose of managing and promoting the character, and they established a cooperative relationship with Crypton Future Media in 2010, leading to Teto officially appearing in the Project Diva franchise and thus being commonly mistaken as an official VOCALOID by many fans. Her immense popularity among vocal synth fans throughout the years would eventually lead to TWINDRILL's collaboration with AH-Software to create her Synthesizer V AI voicebank, announced on April 1st, 2023 and later officially released on April 27, 2023. Her talk-voicebanks for TALQu and VOICEPEAK were released in 2021 and 2025 respectively.

As some point, a prototype VOCALOID voicebank was created for Teto, but it was never officially released due to it being unable to properly capture what made her UTAU voicebank unique and charming. A famous headcanon within the community was that Teto's biggest dream was to become a VOCALOID, so it's ironic how that ended up never officially happening. This headcanon came from one of her most well-known songs being "Kasane Territory" (which is a parody of SilverForest's "⑨destiny ~ Zutto Cirno no Turn" by oxi) in which she mentions dreaming of becoming a VOCALOID right before the final chorus. While she may not have become what she originally wanted, she did become something far superior, right? Well, at least in my opinion.

She is 31 years old, but she ages at half the speed of normal humans due to being a chimera (that being said, she's 15 in chimera years). Her gender is also described as being chimera, which makes my chimeragender-as-one-of-my-many-xenogenders ass really happy. Who knew violently bigoted 2channers in 2008 were capable of making several queer icons? It's beautiful. Her favorite food is baguettes, and she's described as being rather mischievous in terms of personality, alongside being a bit of a "tsundere".

While TWINDRILL has never released any official statement regarding the meaning of her name, her surname 重音 (Kasane) is interperated by many to literally mean "heavy sound" or "overlapped sound". Her name テト (Teto) is derived from "Tetopettenson", the name of a parody version of the song "Le Beau Tambour".

WHY I LOVE HER

I FUCKING LOVE TETO SO MUCH i'm genuinely insane about her you can probably tell because literally my entire site is themed mainly around her HEEEELP. I stumbled upon her during the early years of my special interest in everything vocal synth related (which I believe began probably as far back as 2016-2017, I can't really remember lol) through the songs "Kasane Territory" and "Ochame Kinou" (aka "Fukkireta") and I immediately took a liking to her for reasons I could have never described at the time. Something about her just made me like really reeaaally obsessed with her moreso than I was with Hatsune Miku (y'know, that blue-haired girl everyone knows and has varying opinions about). I really liked her design, and especially her voice since it was robotic in a way that felt unique and way more appealing in comparisons most actual VOCALOIDs. She quickly became my favorite UTAU as well as favorite vocal synth in general. She was my whole personality even back then for a good while. I loved her so much that I roleplayed as her on the playground in 3rd grade. Do I sound batshit crazy enough yet

Unfortunately as time went on, my interest in vocal synths slowly faded away, and thus so did my love for Kasane Teto. My interest stayed mostly dormant for a few years as I indulged in newer obsessions and expanded my music taste. It wasn't until June of 2024 that my love for her, as well as my obsession with vocal synths in general, was reignited when I discovered the song "Machine Love" by Jamie Paige. It didn't take long before she took over my entire life once more and now here we are. My name is chimerathing I'm a fictive of Teto my entire website is Teto Themed and I make Teto Covers.

I see so much of myself in her for some reason and it's ironic considering she's pretty much a blank slate aside from a small snippet of canon-stated information. I think that honestly leaves a lot more room for me to project onto her and imagine a more fleshed-out version of her character in my head. I especially love projecting onto her because literally almost all of her songs that I've personally listened to are so fucking relatable for some reason. Hey guys were you stalking me while writing this song. Huh. Why is this singing robot literally me. To me she's transmasc pangender xenogender and butch just like me because I said so. Her being xenogender might already be canon but SHHHHHHHH

A lot of people shit on her SynthV voicebank for a lot of reasons, which I can admit she can sound a bit bland at times, but with effort and care put in I think she's able to sound genuinely incredible. I really love the overall sound of her SynthV voicebank though and I think she captures the same unique charm her UTAU had perfectly, she just sounds older and more human. Both her SynthV and UTAU voicebanks are good as fuck and in my opinion, work better for different use cases.

Ever since the release of 32ki's "Mesmerizer" featuring both Miku and Teto, causing my favorite chimera to skyrocket in popularity and finally amass the same level of fame as Miku and the other Cryptonloids, of people now dislike Teto and see her as overrated but I've personally stayed a humongous fan of hers despite it all. More people need to indulge in the things they actually like in the vocal synth community instead of complaining about shit just because it's trending. They could never make me hate you Teto I love you please take my hand in marriage OOOOUUUGHHH ITS COMING OUUUT

I think her whole story of once being the "underdog" with a niche fanbase and eventually rising to tremendous amounts of fame is incredibly inspiring and gives me hope that one day I'll be able to leave an impact on the world even if not many people currently know my name. One day the world will know the name Gabriel "Chimerathing" Reyes and I'll inspire others to keep doing what they love by continuing to do what I love.
